Abstract

In this paper the influence of yttrium ion implantation on the high temperature oxidation behaviour at 900 C of powder metallurgical produced chromium has been investigated. Comparative studies were made in which the yttrium was added by alloying. Isothermal testing was performed for up to 1000 hours. The oxide scales were analysed by a wide range of analytical techniques, including scanning electron microscopy (SEM), glancing angle X-ray diffraction (XRD) and secondary neutral mass spectrometry (SNMS). Addition of yttrium by ion implantation significantly improved the oxidation resistance of the material. This was rather similar to the case in which yttrium was alloyed to the base material. The influence of the yttrium on the oxide scale growth processes, as determined from oxygen tracer studies, and on the oxide scale properties are discussed. It is concluded that ion implantation is a powerful tool in oxidation studies, and can thus be very helpful for material development.
