Abstract

This is a progress report on the study of the feasibility of shielding of the GDT-NS. The Gas Dynamic Trap (GDT) Neutron Source (NS)) has been designed at the Budker Institute of Nuclear Physics Novosibirsk, Russia (NKS) to serve as a fusion-material test-facility and is to be built there. The study of the feasibility of shielding of the facility is being carried out in the frame of an ENEA-Frascati - NSK collaboration with support from the ECC. The report presents current results of the neutronic studies of the GDT-NS shielding system. The study starts by assuming an excessive shielding, to be relaxed once survivial of parts - as prescribed by the project - is achieved.
Present results illustrate the steps by which the extreme shield is modified and progressively relaxed, while satisfying the prescribed survivial-life of all the parts studied up till now. The study is being continued into 1996 to complete the survey of all critical parts.
