This report contains the papers presented at a workshop on Individual responsibility for health; moral issues regarding life styles held on 20 and 21 January 1995 in Delft, The Netherlands. The expert meeting was organized by the Department of Medical Ethics, Faculty of Medicine and Health Care, Erasmus University Rotterdam, and funded by the European Communities.
The aim of the workshop was to relate ethical views on people's responsibility for themselves and for others to issues of health and health care. Smoking and drinking are among the topics that in recent years have received wide attention in health care policies. However, as illustrative examples they seem to be merely the tip of an iceberg with a much wider impact on other areas of health care.
In an introductory chapter, the editors, who have taken the initiative for the workshop, point to some of the issues. It is followed by eight contributions.
