The 1995 Annual Report of the Joint Research Centre (JRC) - Institute for Safety Technology (IST) is the detailed account of the Institutional activities pursued during the year. The report is written by the researchers themselves and is aimed at readers interested in a technical overview of the Institute's facilities and those interested in details of the results achieved.
Institutional activities were performed for the following specific programmes: reactor safety, safeguards, fusion, industrial hazards, and reference methods for evaluation of structural reliability. Key research activities addressed in these areas were: severe accidents of nuclear light water reactors in the FARO and STORM experimental facilities, and collaboration with PHEBUS-FP in-pile experiments; development of non-destructive measurements of nuclear materials; operation of the ETHEL tritium safety laboratory; studies on runaway chemical reactions; emergency venting of chemical reactors; explosion and deflagrations of chemical mixtures; building safety for earthquake loads on large structures; and automotive safety for crash impact loading measurements.
The second part of the report illustrates the Institutional support given by the Institute to other Commission services. This concerns mostly support to the Safeguard Inspectorate by development of instrumentation and training of inspectors in the PERLA laboratory. .
