This was the sixth of a very successful series of Workshops organised by the COST 508 Management Committee which concentrated on the mechanical properties of wood composite products. Over 50 experts attended from 18 countries, with delegates travelling from as far as the USA and New Zealand although the majority were from western Europe.
In order to encourage more scientific discussion the format of the Workshop was changed from those held previously. The Workshop was divided into 3 main scientific themes: Creep, Strength and Stiffness, Fatigue and Fracture. For each theme, four presentations of 15 minutes were made during which the speakers were asked to highlight the important scientific aspects of their work. The aim of this was to help provoke the expert audience into identifying areas for discussion during the brainstorming sessions held after the presentations.
The 21 papers published in the proceedings will also act as a comprehensive review of the state of the art of research in the area of the mechanical performance of panel products. .
