The Environment and Climate Programme is a specific research programme of the fourth framework programme for R&TD (1994-98) of the European Union. The research on climate and natural hazards forms an important component of this specific programme. The main objectives of climate research are to contribute towards an improved understanding of the basic mechanisms of the earth's climate, the causes and early detection of climate change, in particular, due to human activities, the assessment of climate change and early detection impacts on European land and water resources. Research on natural hazards (eg floods, earthquakes, volcanic eruption) aims at forecasting, mitigation, prevention of and damage reduction from natural risks. Research is supported in the following areas:

Basic processes in the climate system;
the climate system in the past;
climate variability, simulation of climate and prediction of climate change;
impact of climate changes and other environmental factors on natural resources;
technologies to forecast, prevent and reduce natural risks.
Some of the main feastures of research under these areas are briefly summarized in this brochure. This research is managed in the Climate and Natural Hazards Unit (DG XII/D.2) by a team whose members are listed at the end of this brochure. chure.
