Relationship between UV spectra and molecular structure of resveratrol oligomers
Vitis roots contain monomer and oligomer of resveratrol derivatives, but the stilbenic fraction contain other unknown compounds. We used the HPLC-DAD as a convenient tool for quantification, but in this paper we demonstrated that UV spectra of chromatographic peaks can give useful information on the structure of unknown oligostilbenes. With the increase of the degree of polymerization the relative intensity of the bands at 230 and 326 nm change, and a linear positive correlation between the A230/A326 ratio and the number of the stilbenic units of the oligomers was found. The result of this study let us to classify the unknown compounds as resveratrol oligomers bearing 7, 4, and 3 units.
