This paper uses first principles to derive the availability or reliability of systems of parallel components simpler than the two out of three parallel components. Components are assumed to be subject to two types of maintenance (corrective and preventive). Derivations are based on the assumption that after maintenance components become as good as new. This assumption makes the renewal argument applicable and gives rise to integral equations for system reliability or availability. Under general assumptions on the distribution of lifetimes and maintenance times of system components, the paper derives the availability of the system of a reparable component, the mean time to failure of a system of two redundant parallel components subject to repair upon failure and the reliability of two redundant parallel components subject to corrective and preventive maintenance.
