The environmental implications of many human activities occur over a large scale and with a range of impacts to natural and human systems. Developing coherent information for responsible decision making becomes challenging in the presence of uncertainties, complexity and conflict; a sole dependence on science is not sufficient. Integrated environmental assessment (IEA) is a framework that extends traditional scientific approaches by incorporating the participation of individuals outside the scientific community with vital local and informal knowledge, and of those who will be affected most by environmental policies. IEA avoids a single advocated approach and encourages many forms of inquiry to form a broad analysis.
