Biomass burning: An ecosystem process of global significance
The present paper proposes a general framework of analysis of biomass burning in the terrestrial biosphere as driven mainly but not exclusively by its impact on atmospheric chemistry. Novel contributions of satellite observations will be described as one of the major sources of information on the extent and dynamics of vegetation fires at the global level. Whenever possible, the significance of biomass burning events of Asia in this global picture will be highlighted.
