The ITER reference case presented in the interim design report (IDR) is obtained using the transport code PRETOR. The code has been modified to more correctly take into account the bootstrap current profile. We have coupled the code to the equilibrium code CHEASE, which computes also the Mercier and Ballooning criteria and is interfaced to the ideal MHD code ERATO and the resistive code MARS. We find that the reference case, having beta(N) equals 2.5, is stable to all these criteria, ideal and resistive. The results obtained by modifying the profiles and the stability margins will also be shown.

We have also investigated the stability of internal kink modes in ITER. A sawtooth trigger prescription that accounts for resistive, kinetic and fast particles effects has been implemented in PRETOR. Sawtooth periods of typically 100 s are found. The ERATO code has been used to more accurately determined the MHD sigma contribution to the m equals 1 stability threshold. .
