This paper presents the European Union research and development (R&D) strategy in the field of rational use of energy in industry in the context of its non-nuclear energy R&D programmes. The main subject areas cover heat recovery, unit operators, modelling of integrated processes and advanced sensors, Examples of projects in these areas are given. The direction that future R&D should take is indicated.
