The poloidal field coil system of ASDEX upgrade produces a large magnetic stray field outside the tokamak system. Certain technical components, installations for plasma heating and diagnostics can not operate in such stray field. Passive magnetic shielding by iron bodies has been used to reduce the stray field to the locally acceptable values. This report describes the positioning and the dimensioning of the iron bodies, the calculation of the change of the stray field due to the iron bodies and finally the disturbance of the magnetic fields in the plasma region due to the presence of the iron bodies. A computer programme for calculation of magnetic fields with paramagnetic bodies (PROFI), the Gourdon programme for calculation of vaccum magnetic field lines and island sizes, and analytical calculations have been employed for this purpose.
