The Seminar was organised to provide an opportunity for the decision makers of the pan-European steel industry to meet and discuss their common problems. In a global economy and in an environment of increasing trade liberalisation, it does not make sense to address the problems of the steel industries of western and eastern Europe as different. The evolution of technology makes the border between integrated and electric producers more and more elusive.
The seminar provided an opportunity to discuss the advantages and disadvantages of different technologies, to understand under what circumstances different technologies are most likely to yield the best results, and to learn the direction of technological change in the steel industry. The seminar addressed the issue of gathering the necessary financial resources for rationalisation projects in the pan-European steel industry.
