Types of environmental indicators and categories of environmental aspects in environmental analyses
This paper deals with environmental indicators. The need for environmental indicators is argued, a definition of environmental indicator is given and the pressure-state-response (PSR) framework is recalled. With reference to approaches in different areas, the types of indicators considered in environmental analyses are pointed out and the categories of environmental aspects (environmental issues, environmental problems, environmental factors) investigated. The documents examined are: the report on indicators of environmental performance of the Organization for Economic Cooperation (OECD) group on the state of the environment, the Dobris report, the Eurostat project on pressure indicators, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) report on ecological indicators and the handbook of environmental indicators of the Italian Association of Environmental Analysts. Some considerations on the types of environmental indicators and categories of the environmental aspects considered in the different approaches are given.
