In the designs for a water-cooled Pb-17Li blanket proposed up to now, all effort has been concentrated on limiting tritium permeation into the cooling water as much as possible by assuming the application of very efficient tritium permeation barriers on the blanket cooling tubes.
Starting from the DEMO blanket layout, this paper shows the results of a parametric study for the sizing of tritium extractor from Pb-17Li and water detritiation system as a function of tritium permeation rate into the cooling water in the absence of tritium permeation barriers. The results here presented are encouraging, allowing to simplify the system as a whole, thus improving ultimately safety and reliability aspects.
