Abstract

The effect of various elements added by ion implantation on the isothermal oxidation behaviour of Ti-48Al-2Cr at 800 C in air has been studied. Ion implantation of Si, Nb, Ta, W, and Al showed a large beneficial effect on the isothermal oxidation behaviour of Ti-48Al-2Cr (although the Si-containing specimens showed a poor cyclic oxidation resistance). A minor positive effect was found for Mo, Y, Mn, Pt, and Cr. Ion implantation of quaternary elements, in this case Si and Nb, revealed similar results during isothermal oxidation as found for the alloyed intermetallics.
