Abstract

In order to release or recycle ferritic scrap coming from G2/G3 reactors stage 2 decommissioning, an automatic foam decontamination machine has been designed, made and tested.
This automaton can decontaminate the inside of big pipes of a range of diameter from 0.5 to 1.6 m,and 2 to 4 m length. Made very robust, it proved to be reliable, and the foams were firm enough to stick to the pipe walls, although they withstood effective strong acid and basic reagents.
By tests made in situ, it has been proved that the treatment capacity in two shifts was 15 metric tons of steel a day, compatible with the dedicated melter output which is 12 T a day. In this way the contamination threshold required, that is to say below 1 Bq/g, was easily reached, with a liquid effluent production less than 20 1/m(2), which was treated at the Central Liquid Treatment Station of Marcoule.
Of course, such an automaton could be used in other industrial areas such as pipe cleaning, stripping and passivation. n.
