Abstract

This report illustrates the successful collaboration of five European research institutes, which have formed an interdisciplinary science group to investigate integrated approaches to desertification mapping and monitoring in the Mediterranean basin with the means of remote sensing in combination with environmental modelling. The following specific objectives have been addressed: land surface parameters extraction from remotely sensed data; erosion hazard assessment using remotely sensed data and a distributed erosion model. These objectives have been reached through the combined use of remote sensing data (Landsat-TM and airborne imaging spectrometry) and ground measurements on 2 intensive test sites: Ardèche test site (Southern France) and Turis test site (Spain). An additional test site (Xilokastron, Greece) has been used for the preliminary investigation of operational monitoring capabilities.
