Institute for Remote Sensing Applications/annual report 1995Funded under: FP4-JRC-RES 9C
This is the 1995 annual report of the Institute for Remote Sensing Applications' (IRSA). Research themes addressed included the monitoring of land resources and land use, coastal monitoring, development of advanced techniques for the analysis and interpretation of remotely sensed data, global change and the Centre for Earth Observation (CEO). Research oriented to the development of operational remote sensing applications was carried out in support of the sectorial policies of various Directorates General (DG) of the European Commission. Support thus included the operational use of remote sensing techniques for provision of agricultural statistics, and for the setting up of registers and the controls of declared areas, wine and olive registers for DGVI (competitive support); monitoring of tropical forests and vegetation fires in association with DG XI (Environment), European Microwave Signature Laboratory results dissemination for DGXIII (Telecommunications, Information Market and Exploitation of Research), Neural Networks for DGIII (Industry) and an Agriculture and Land Use study for EUROSTAT. In the light of a changing and expanding European Earth Observation Programme, the Institute will be renamed Space Applications Institute (1996) and will also take into consideration space navigation and telecommunications.
