This text presents a selection of basic ideas and procedures in probability theory and statistics and is intended to provide some background information for computational physicists who work in the area of scientific data interpretation, but do not have a formal statistical education. The emphasis is on motivation and conveyance of the basic practical concepts without giving a decision-theoretical foundation and without entering the interesting ramifications of statistical optimality theory.
