Abstract

In order to apply diving to extensive dismantling works on a large scale, the development of operational procedures and equipment was required, to guarantee total safety and radioprotection to personnel. It should be noted that water is an exceptionally efficient biological shield and any task which can be performed under water reduces the dosimetric cost for operators. The development programme has produced the following:
diving equipment (essentially a custom designed diving hat and a real time underwater dose monitoring system);
recognized codes of good practice for each physical task performed by each member of the diving team;
cutting and decontamination tools which can be efficiently operated under water with the assistance of divers (plasma, arc saw, diamond cable, etc). Full scale dismantling operations were performed, distributed over two years at Marcoule, which have proven the industrial viability of these methods, their safety and their low dose cost. t.
