Propensity and the order of an optical fractional Fourier system
In this report the following inverse problem is considered: How can the order of an optical implementation of the Fractional Fourier Transform (FRT) be remotely measured? We present a scheme for the unambiguous estimation of the order based on the use of an element with a suitable transmittance function. The transmittance function is chosen by making use of the concepts of a ruler state and the propensity function. Calculations based on the use of a Gaussian input wavefunction are presented to clarify the method. In the examples some practical issues are highlighted and the order of FRT systems is estimated numerically.
