The literature survey which is the focus of this report covers a broad range of topics related to the concept of industrial efficiency and its measurements. The objective of the study was to provide a synopsis of the treatment of efficiency in the theoretical literature and the application of such theory to the measurement and improvement of efficiency in industry. The literature survey covered the areas of:
operations research/management science;
industrial engineering/operations management.
These subject areas provide a series of approaches to the treatment of efficiency and its measurement and also provide a range of ways in which the role of efficiency in economic development can be understood. Industrial policy issues relating to efficiency are also addressed. sed.
