The discussion about sustainability in the last years has focused very much on an environmental notion of the concept. Many other important elements and preconditions for achieving sustainability have been rather neglected, for example the social and economic dimensions of the topic. They are exemplified by challenges like unemployment, North-South relations and wealth creation. In this report, an encompassing approach to sustainability presented, inter-connecting the different elements. Based on this approach, the role which new technology can play as a driving forces for sustainable development is discussed. This leads to the identification of four main policy strategies to foster sustainable development through the targeted stimulation of technological change.
