Abstract

This report describes the certification of the number fraction of negative capsules and the mean number of colony forming particles (cfp) of Listeria (L.) monocytogenes in a capsule containing artificially contaminated milk powder. In this study 12 laboratories determined the number (z) of cfp in a capsule according to a procedure specifically developed for that purpose (enumeration procedure) and also determined the presence or absence of L. monocytogenes in a capsule according to the International Dairy Federation (IDF) procedure (IDF 143 standard). The enumeration procedure determined the mean number of L. monocytogenes cfp as well as the fraction of capsules in which no L. monocytogenes could be detected. The presence/absence procedure only determined the fraction of capsules in which no L. monocytogenes could be detected. The certified value arithmetic mean of z is 7.2 cfp of L. monocytogenes in a capsule (95% confidence interval 6.8 - 7.6). Based on these values the number fraction of capsules in which no L. monocytogenes could be detected are calculated for the enumeration procedure. The certified number fraction is 0.075% (95% confidence interval 0.050% - 0.11%). Based on the presence/absence procedure a fraction of capsules in which no L. monocytogenes could be detected of 1.2% was found (one sided 05% confidence upper limit 2.3%).
