Abstract

The enthalpies of solution of La(OH)(3) (crystalline), Nd(OH)(3) (crystalline), Sm(OH)(3) (crystalline) and Am(OH)(3) (crystalline) and of La (crystalline, Nd (crystalline) and Sm (crystalline) in 6.00 mol dm{-3} HCl have been measured at 298.15 K. From these measurements using auxiliary values to following standard molar enthalpies of formation Delta(f)H m (kJ mol{-1}) are calculated as
La(OH)(3) (crystalline): - (1416.7 +/- 1.3); Nd(OH)(3) (crystalline): - (1415.6 +/- 2.3); Sm(OH)(3) (crystalline): - (1406.6 +/- 2.2); Am(OH)(3) (crystalline): - (1343.6 +/- 1.8).
From the values combined with measured and estimated entropy values, the solubility products of the hydroxides are obtained. These results are compared with existing literature data and thermodynamic relationships between the hydroxides and the corresponding hydroxycarbonates are established. .
