Abstract

With respect to the physical processes within the upper mired layer (UML) involved in the breaking of wind waves, Craig and Banner (1994) obtained an analytical solution from which expressions for turbulent kinetic energy (TKE) dissipation decay and depth of wave-affected layer followed. This solution is applicable only within the near-surface diffusive sublayer, in which the diffusion of TKE was balanced by its dissipation.
This solution is generalized for a system of two sublayers, the diffusive sublayer and the underlying constant-shear sublayer, in which the classical 'wall of the wall' holds. Second, an analytical solution for the TKE dissipation decay within the wave-affected layer is compared with that found by Craig and Banner (1994). Finally, using a standard UML model, five TKE dissipation measurement sets were simulated.
