This report describes a particular approach for agricultural surveys on area frame sampling. Most of the methodology reported can be applied to other fields, in particular in the environmental field. Some comments are made on area frames based on segments with physical boundaries, techniques used by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) and point sampling in square segments, used in France for the TER-UTI survey. Compared with the USDA approach, area frames of square segments are much cheaper to implement and should be better adapted to the needs of transition economy and developing countries. The results of both techniques are comparable. Cost efficiency of ground surveys can be improved with the TER-UTI point sampling method, but data from point surveys are much more difficult to merge with satellite images.
