Abstract

A Reinforced Concerted Action (RCA) has been conducted in the area of reactor safety as part of the programme in Nuclear Fission Safety under the 3rd Framework Research and Development Programme 1990-1994 of the European Commission. The RCA covered joint activities mainly based on experimental and analytical programmes on severe accident phenomena, both for existing and next-generation light water reactors. The behaviour and qualification of the containment system, as well as management and control of accidents were also studied. The RCA was subdivided into eight projects: core degradation progression; hydrogen related problems; molten fuel/coolant interaction; reactor pressure vessel response; molten core/concrete interaction; source term (fission product behaviour); containment response; accident management support. This final report of the RCA shows the objectives and the achievements of the eight projects and gives also indications on how the coordination was organized between the various participants.
