Community Research and Development Information Service - CORDIS

The European Union organizes research programmes which for the most part have no equivalents in Europe. All of these actions are regrouped into framework programmes which are planned for several years in a setting of coherent Union research effort. The Fourth Framework Programm, launched in 1994, will end in 1998. Its budget adds up to 12.3 billion ECU, its actions, which will have a direct impact on the evolution of European society and economy, form a unique instrument in Europe. The Fourth Framework Programme covers ten large scientific and technological spheres. It is implemented through 20 specific programmes. Examples of the results obtained from previous programmes are presented to allow the reader to better appreciate the specificity of the European approach in the area of research. The three objectives of the Fourth Framework Programme are: to develop scientific and technological excellence in Europe in response to the needs of industry and the quality of life in the member states; promoting cooperation in Europe, reinforcing the coordination of research efforts undertaken by member states and developing the results of research projects; contributing to the implementation of other community policies (environment, transport, etc).
