Abstract

If the European Union is to build and sustain its competitiveness, its ability to innovate is crucial as it faces the increasing pace of technological developments worldwide. To meet this challenge, the European Union (EU) is committed to policies which, within an open and competitive environment, encourage industry and commerce to invest in research and development, pursue technical innovation and work together in partnership across Member States. To provide a dedicated catalyst and focus which helps the maritime sector meet the challenges of these three crucial objectives, the European Commision has formed the Maritime Task Force. A Task Force which has a clear and dynamic role in reinforcing the link between industry and research and encouraging technical innovation.
