Scientific Cooperation of the European Union with Third Mediterranean CountriesFunded under: FP3-STD 3, FP4-INCO, IC-AVICENNE
The European Community launched in 1982 the programme Science and Technology for Development (STD 1) which since then has seen two successors (STD 2 and 3) covering the period until 1994. All STD programmes applied a thematic approach and focused on the fields of agriculture (including forestry and fisheries) and health. The AVICENNE initiative, a research programme with pre-defined research themes but geographically targeted towards the Mediterranean basin, was started in 1992. By supporting work on problems common to the whole of the Mediterranean basin it aimed to intensify scientific links between the EU and the Third Mediterranean Countries (TMC) as well as between different TMCs. This catalogue of contracts is the second edition of an attempt to put together an overview of joint research projects which involved participants from the TMC and which received funds from Community actions. It provides an interesting insight into the already realised wealth of scientific cooperation between the EU and the non-EU Mediterranean countries and predicts intensified scientific Euro-Mediterranean collaboration in the future.
