Abstract

This note is a guide for applicants who wish to respond to the second general call for proposals under the MAST-III programme (1996). It complements, and is to be read in conjunction with, the Work Programme. The call is based on the Work Programme and the purpose of this note is to achieve appropriately focused projects. In implementing the programme, the Commission is committed to meeting the full range of objectives set out in the MAST-III Work Programme: to understand how marine systems function at basin scales, in order to prepare for sustainable use of the oceans consistent with the preservation of marine environmental quality and to determine their role in global change. While the results of the first call have mostly addressed the functioning of marine systems, the second call must take explicit account of the objectives of the sustainable use and environmetnal quality of the oceans, with due consideration to the factors and processes influencing those issues. The research topics have been arranged under the following priority themes:
health of the oceans and management for their sustainable use;
coastal zone management;
operational forecasting;
technological opportunities. es.
