This publication, dynamics of membrane protein insertion and folding, describes the activities of a research network in the 'Human capital and mobility' (HCM) programme 1990-94. The text gives an outline of the scientific research in this crucial area and illustrates the challenges and opportunities of working in a transnational network. HCM was one of the 15 specific programmes implemented under the third framework programme for reseach and technological development (199-94). As many as 700 research networks were awarded Community support through the HCM programme. The research teams were chosen on the basis of the originality of their approach, their scientific excellence and the research value of their proposals. The work of the HCM programme has been continued in the Community's 'Training and mobility of researchers' programme 1994-98. The scientific aim of the Network is to describe in detail at the molecular level the mechanisms and processes which occur during cellular and organelle development resulting in membrane formation and hence compartmentalization which is essential to the viability of all living cells.
