The development of metallic U/Pu spikes for U and Pu determination by isotope dilution mass spectrometry in re-processing plant input solutions
Metallic U/Pu spikes for determinations by isotope dilution mass spectrometry (IDMS) of uranium and plutonium in input solution of fuel reprocessing plants have been developed. These consist of a (235)U metal and a separate (239)Pu spike in the form of Gd-Pu-Nd alloy. The Gd matrix provided good ductility, excellent solubility in nitric acid and satisfactory oxidation resistance. Excellent homogeneity was demonstrated by IDMS and by gamma-counting. The latter technique was developed into a useful and precise nondestructive quality control method. The dual U/Gd-Pu-Nd metal spike was certified as reference material IRMM-1030 with certified quantities: (235)U and (239)Pu amounts and U and Pu amount ratios.
