The interface microstructure of tetragonal zirconia (Y(2)O(3)-stab.), (TZP), brazed to itself, Ti and Ti6Al4V with a commercial Ag35Cu1.65Ti filler alloy at 900 C in vacuum was investigated. TiO formed in the reaction zone in TZP/TZP joints irrespective of the brazing time. In TZP/Ti joints, a complex interface microstructure comprising Ti(2)0, Cu(2)Ti(4)O and Cu-Ti-intermetallics was time dependent. High joint strengths of over 400 MPa were obtained for short brazing times. In TZP/Ti6Al4V joints, the evolution of the microstructure with brazing time depends on diffusion of Ti, Al and V to the interface forming Cu(2)(Ti, Al,V)(4)O.
