Abstract

The present study evaluates the mechanical properties and fracture behaviour of a series of Hi-Nicalon (SiC) fibre reinforced Si(3)N(4) matrix composites. The samples were fabricated by a slurry infiltration process of unidirectional fibre performs. Densification was performed by hot-pressing at two temperatures : 1550 C and 1600 C under 27 MPa. The fibre-matrix interface was engineered by precoating the fibres with 3 different thicknesses of pyrolytic carbon : 100, 200 and 400 nm. The mechanical properties of these composites were investigated at room temperature under tensile loading and compared with uncoated fibre reinforced Si(3)N(4) matrix composites.
