Abstract

Parallel two-dimensional direct and iterative solvers have been developed to solve the Poisson equation in particle-in-cell (PIC) simulations of beam instabilities in gyrotron beam tunnels. Both solvers are based on domain decomposition techniques. The direct method uses an efficient two step algorithm well suited for problems with a constant coefficient matrix. The iterative solver is based on a simple conjugate gradient algorithm with diagonal preconditioning. First experiences with the iterative solver are presented and compared with solutions obtained with the direct method.
