Particle-in-cell simulations of electron-cyclotron instabilities in gyrotron beam tunnels with an tapered axial magnetic field
A two-dimensional parallel electromagnetic particle-in-cell (PIC) code is used to study the electron-cyclotron instabilities in a gyrotron beam tunnel, and their effects on beam quality, the beam tunnel being immersed in an linearly tapered static magnetic field. This code has been ported on the CRAY T3D massively parallel computer, which allows extensive simulations. Results show the influence of taper in the magnetic field on the growing of electromagnetic backward-wave instabilities.
