The experimental plant functioned very satisfactorily. The electrostatic filter very effectively separated both the tar and the ammonium salts carried in the form of aerosols by the gas. In consequence, condensation was given off by the first cooler after a short sedimentation, that contained less than 100 mg NH(3)(fix) and only 20-30 mg filterable particles per litre. The concentration of ammoniac was also noticeably lower, so that a dispenser before the reverse osmosis was able to be dispensed with. A clogging up of the second cooler was prevented by spraying with tar.
Contrary to the original expectations, that an increase in concentration of the fixed ammonium salts of 1 : 6 was attainable, a ratio of 1 : 30 was achieved without jeopardising the tar water separation. The ratio denoting the increase in concentration of 1 : 30 is equal to a concentration of 85 g/l NH(3)(fix) (ie 265 g/l NH(4)Cl).
