Abstract

The present study, carried out under a CECA contract, is the first stage in the understanding of the mechanism of deformation of coke ovens and in the quantification of the phenomena. Two approaches were followed in the research work - theoretic and experimental. Various techniques for measuring the deformation of coke oven casings were studied and/or attempted during the course of the present study. We would particularly mention the study of width measuring of the cell by uncooled capacitive sounding, and the experimentation on an optical method for measuring reversible and cyclical deformations of oven casings during the carbonisation process. Finally, in the diagnostic field, new instruments have been developed for the inspection of ovens by endoscopy: rigid water-cooled endoscopes with up to 8 metres of usable length; and a flexible air-cooled endoscope, the Videofil sounder.
