European research towards the XXIst century
Following the request of the European Parliament Committee for Research, Technological Development and Energy, the Institute for Prospective Technological Studies (IPTS) organized a workshop on European Research towards the XXIst century which was held in Sevilla, 29-30 August, 1996. This publication contains the main conclusions together with the report on the more detailed accounts of the two days meeting. The topics that came up for debate were wide-ranging, but maybe summarized as including: sustainability as transformation, particularly in relation to the need for political vision and the need for holistic policies; research and technological development (RTD) beyond issues of cost-competitiveness and, indeed, beyond competitiveness in its entirety; the value of basic science; globalization and European diversity; and issues of quality beyond sustainability.
