Abstract

Wetting behaviour and reactions of a Au-Ni-V-Mo filler alloy on Si(3)N(4) have been investigated. The interfacial microstructures of the joints were characterized using scanning electron microscope (SEM), electron probe microanalysis (EPM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) techniques. The active metal V promotes wetting and the alloy reacts with Si(3)N(4), however, slow wetting kinetics were observed. The bonding atmosphere was found to have a strong effect on the interfacial reactions. Si(3)N(4) joints brazed with this alloy at 1000 C were found to have good high temperature properties; 65% of the room temperature strength was retained at 600 C, whereas air annealing at 800 C increased the strength.
