The development, construction and operation of an instrument for the automatic sampling and analysis of organic pollutants in air is described. The instrument consists of a liquid chromatograph equipped with an autoinjector which has been modified to act as a sampling device. Air samples are automatically drawn through the device which contains a suitable reaction liquid. Pollutants are transferred to the liquid and selectively retained. After each sampling step the liquid is injected into the chromatographic system and analyzed. The sampling conditions for the determination of formaldehyde (and acetaldehyde) are discussed.
