The European Network for Inspection Qualification (ENIQ) published at the beginning of 1995 the first issue of the European methodology for qualification of nondestructive testing (NDT). A pilot study is currently being carried out to explore the issues involved through the practical application of the European methodology. The components selected for the pilot study are austenitic pipe to pipe and pipe to elbows welds typical of those in boiling water reactor (BWR) recirculation loops. Once all features of the inspection system have been qualified an in-service inspection will be simulated in order to test the feasibility of the qualification approach followed. In this paper the current status of this pilot study is discussed.
