Abstract

The behaviour of the fission gases in water reactor fuels has been a matter of concern for more than 30 years, and even today questions arise especially when burnups above 4-5 irradiation cycles are envisaged. This paper discusses the design challenge to achieve the highest possible retention of the fission gases in the fuel matrix, compatible with the lowest fuel swelling and the lowest probability of cladding failures
