In this study the application of several organic buffer modifiers to capillary zone electrophoresis (CZE) separation of metallothionein (MT) isoforms is investigated. The influence of the content of the organic buffer modifier on migration times, current, mobilities and separation of the model samples (rabbit liver MT and horse kidney MT) are investigated. The effect of the organic buffer modifiers were found to be modifier specific although the trends were in the same direction. It is shown that organic buffer modifiers significantly enhance the resolution, ie with organic modifiers it is possible to obtain a good separation of the entire electropherogram of rabbit liver MT in one run which, when performed with Tris-borate buffer without organic buffer modifier required 2 separate runs with either different pHs or different temperatures.
