This report describes the results of a research programme to investigate various aspects of methane capture on high-performance coalfaces. Although conventional cross-measure methane drainage has been practised in the United Kingdom for many years, with many variations on borehole layout designed to suit local conditions, on investigation into the suitability and efficiency of such systems has previously been carried out. The research programme has been carried out on three fronts: underground investigations at two collieries using different mining techniques and methane drainage practices, numerical modelling to study the basic mechanism of gas flow in the strata around mine workings, and the application of a database/expert system to the analysis of data on methane drainage practice worldwide.
