Community Research and Development Information Service - CORDIS

Following the successful development and application by British Coal Corporation (BCC), of the 'two-product Larcodems' centrifugal type dense medium separator, capable of processing 250 tonnes per hour of 100 x 0.5 mm raw coal, further research continued to examine the Larcodems potential as a three-product separator. A secondary vessel was designed to replace the reject vortextractor and provide secondary separation of the primary vessel reject at a higher relative density. A full production-size secondary vessel was installed and evaluated by modifying an existing two-product Larcodems plant. This constituted the main objective of this ECSC-aided project which started in October 1993. The results are described in this report.
In addition the opportunity was taken to carry out water flow and pressure tests on the redundant Larcodems plant at Goldthorpe Colliery to obtain data to assist in this optimization of the two-product vessel at Asfordby.
